Pick it up before you commit to it
A tool spec sheet will not tell you that a drill is nose-heavy with a 5.0Ah pack on it, or that an impact driver you will hold above your head all afternoon is worth going compact for. Ours are out of the box and on the wall, with the batteries beside them, and the person behind the counter has used most of them on their own house.

What is covered, and how to keep it that way
Warranty terms come from DEWALT and differ by product. We will pull the right sheet for what you buy.
How coverage works
- Most DEWALT power tools carry a three-year limited warranty, one year of free service and a 90-day money-back guarantee; terms vary by product, so check the sheet in the box.
- Batteries carry their own limited warranty, typically three years, and are not covered against ordinary wear from charge cycles.
- Keep the receipt. We hold a copy of the sale at the counter and can reprint it if you lose yours.
- Register the tool with MyDEWALT and the purchase date is on file whether or not you can find the paperwork.
Keeping it right
- Blow the vents out. A brushless motor still overheats if the intake is packed with sawdust.
- Do not leave packs on a concrete floor in January or in a truck bed in July — lithium-ion loses capacity permanently at both extremes.
- Store batteries at part charge rather than flat if a tool is going away for the season.
- Change the blade before you force the cut. Most burnt motors we see were pushed through a dull blade.

Will my old DEWALT batteries fit a new tool?
Every 20V MAX* battery fits every 20V MAX* tool, from the first ones in 2011 to the current XR® range. The older 18V NiCd packs do not fit, but DEWALT sells an adapter that lets a 20V MAX* battery run an 18V tool. The 12V MAX* XTREME™ line is a separate platform and does not interchange.
What is the difference between 20V MAX*, XR®, ATOMIC™ and FLEXVOLT®?
20V MAX* is the battery platform. ATOMIC™ is the compact, lighter-duty body on that platform. XR® is the higher-output brushless range. FLEXVOLT® is a battery that switches between 20V and 60V depending on the tool it is dropped into, which is what powers the 60V saws and outdoor tools.
Should I buy a bare tool or a kit?
Buy one kit to get batteries and a charger, then buy bare tools after that. A bare tool is typically around half the price of the kit version and you already own the packs. Model numbers ending in B are bare.

Can you order a tool you do not stock?
Yes. We can order across the DEWALT catalogue and will give you a lead time at the counter rather than a guess.
Is it cheaper at a big box?
On a promoted combo kit, sometimes. On a bare tool, a battery or an accessory, rarely — and nobody at a big box will tell you which impact driver is the wrong one for your job.
What does the asterisk on 20V MAX* mean?
It is DEWALT’s own footnote: maximum initial battery voltage measured without a workload is 20 volts, and nominal voltage is 18. It is the same battery chemistry either way.
