Keeping two-stroke equipment starting.
Almost every saw or trimmer that comes in dead has a fuel problem. This list prevents most of them.
Do this
- Run ethanol-free MotoMix, or mix fresh 89-octane with HP Ultra at 50:1 and use it within 30 days
- Empty the tank and run the carburetor dry before storing for more than a month
- Clean the air filter every few tanks; tap out, do not wash a paper filter
- Keep the chain sharp; a dull chain overheats the bar and the operator
- Check chain tension when the saw is cold and again after warming up
- Replace the spark plug each season
Avoid this
- Pump gas with more than 10% ethanol; it voids the STIHL warranty and gums the carburetor
- Leaving mixed fuel in the tank over winter
- Running a chain with the bar oil empty
- Cutting with a 20 in. bar on a small saw; it slows the saw and makes it harder to control
- Starting a saw on your knee or in the air; use the ground and the chain brake
- Ignoring a chain that pulls to one side; it needs sharpening or a new bar
Bring the machine in. Service, chain sharpening and parts are at the same counter that sold it.
Warranty explained
What the STIHL limited warranty covers.
Terms differ for homeowner and professional use. We register the sale for you.
| Homeowner use | Gas units carry a two-year limited warranty on defects in materials and workmanship for personal, residential use. Battery units and chargers are covered similarly. |
|---|---|
| Professional or rental use | Shorter terms apply when a unit earns income or is rented. We confirm the exact period for your model when you buy. |
| Emission components | Emission-related parts carry separate federal and state coverage on top of the STIHL warranty. |
| What is not covered | Fuel-related damage from ethanol above 10%, stale fuel, or wrong oil ratio; normal wear items such as chain, bar, filters, spark plugs and trimmer line; damage from misuse or lack of maintenance. |
| How to claim | Bring the unit and your receipt to our counter. As a servicing dealer we diagnose it here and file the claim with STIHL. |
This is our plain-language summary. The printed STIHL Limited Warranty statement that comes with the unit is the document that governs.
